Croatia’s top-ranked heavyweight is the surging Filip Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KO) who is, along with Joe Joyce, arguably one of the best in the division’s crop of up-and-coming fighters. But that country’s No. 2 heavyweight isn’t exactly chopped liver either.
On Friday, Croatia’s current runner-up, Agron Smakici (18-1, 16 KO), faces Fernando Rodrigo Simoes de Almeida (9-5) at Historische Stadthalle, Wuppertal, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
Not much is known about the 32-year-old Smakici, who is ranked No. 53 of 1,317 active fighters in the division by BoxRec.
The 32-year-old, 6’6″ southpaw was 14-0 before being derailed in one by Zhan Kossobutskiy (then 11-0) in November 2019. However, in his most recent bout in March, Agron stopped a solid heavyweight in Lenroy Thomas (then 25-5-1, 13 KO) in three rounds.
So, his No. 53 rating by BoxRec might not impress you, but his BoxRec rating is still higher than that of young lion Jared Anderson, Fabio Wardley, Jermaine Franklin, Manuel Charr, Nathan Gorman, and Christian Hammer.
Should Smakici defeat his foe on Friday, I’d like to see him mix it up with fellas in the top 50.
