Floyd Mayweather vs Adrien Broner (Pre Pacquiao)? Why it would be brilliant

Written by

Apparently, Adrien Broner has a big announcement to make.

Of course, his former friend turned rival, Floyd Mayweather, announced several weeks ago he’ll be fighting a tune-up prior to facing fight legend Manny Pacquiao in a rematch.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Are the rumors true?

Hmm… Now, it’s coming together.

Absolutely brilliant.

Does Floyd knows how to make money and steal the spotlight, or what?

Let's rewind all the way back to April 2016.

Moments after defeating Ashley Theophane in Washington, DC, Adrien Broner called out his former BFF who was in the audience.

“Somebody that I look up to and admire took the chance to do an interview and talk bad about me,” Broner said. “I don’t know how y’all look at it. I don’t like it. I’m a man that learned s*** from physical activity."

"Floyd, you got to see me.”

"I will never let another man disrespect me. I don't care if we sparring or fighting. Let's get it on," Broner said.

Adrien was presumably responding to critical comments about him made by Floyd days earlier.

"Adrien Broner, his nickname is 'The Problem' [and] I think he has a lot of problems," Floyd told FightHype.com leading up to Broner vs Theophane.

"Adrien Broner was just an alcoholic six months ago. One thing I'm trying to find out about Adrien Broner, is he a boxing promoter, is he a rapper, is he a porn star, or is he a gangster?"

… Or is he Floyd’s next opponent?

Is Floyd going to accept Broner’s challenge after all?

There’s little demand for Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 so it would make sense if Floyd engaged in a high-profile, drama-filled tune-up fight to get people talking about him again. And Mayweather vs Broner, if promoted well, could be the biggest fight Floyd could make today, sans Mayweather vs Canelo 2.

What about Spence and Crawford?
Sure, Errol Spence and Terence Crawford are welterweights and two of the world’s best pound for pound. And yes, both fellas might actually be favored over Floyd in a hypothetical next-fight match-up. However, does either guy have enough juice with the mainstream to generate mega millions facing a 42 year old Floyd?

At this moment, Spence and Crawford would be too much for the reward for Floyd Mayweather.

… But what if Floyd were to face his cocky “Lil Bro” who is a former best friend, protege and pupil turned enemy?

Old pro vs young star… Mentor vs pupil… Rival vs enemy. Now, combine those elements with the controversy and outlandishness of both fighters. I’m not sure Crawford or Spence could sell a fight on the big stage like Adrien Broner.

Mayweather vs Broner would produce more drama than All My Children and more trash talk than Wilder vs Fury. But unlike the aforementioned heavyweights, their strong backstory would - or could - captivate the masses.

Some die-hard fans might protest and threaten to boycott it, insisting Mayweather vs Broner would be little more than a “money grab” .,... But casual fans > die-hards

The day-to-day stories in TMZ, alone, would probably generate several hundred thousand buys from casual and non-fans of the sport.

But what about Broner’s less-than-impressive showings since 2015?

Answer: What about Conor McGregor?

Let’s not forget that mismatch a little over a year ago. Floyd fought an amateur (literally) and the public gobbled it up. In fact, it was the second highest revenue generating fight in boxing history despite the fact one guy wasn’t even a boxer. (And yes, Floyd could have ended that bout in the first round if he wanted to)

So what if Broner is 33-3-1. McGregor was 0-0. In fact Conor McGregor has been knocked out in 2 of his last 3 pro fights yet he is, by far, UFC’s biggest cash cow,

Drama, controversy and good storylines sell
Who remembers when Floyd fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2007? That bout exceeded revenue expectations as a result of the massive build-up for the fight, including the famous rift between Floyd and his father who had served as De La Hoya's trainer since 2001.

Although Mayweather Sr. reunited with his son at the start of Floyd Jr.'s training camp, he had no official role as Floyd Jr. opted to retain the services od his uncle Roger instead.

The drama behind, and backdrop for, Mayweather vs Broner would make the chaos between Floyd and his dad look like a typical father-and-son spat.

If Floyd returns, put Broner's name at the top of the list for "sizzling" potential tune-ups.

Floyd would earn high money for facing 'Little Bro' without taking the level of risk he would in facing Canelo, Spence or Crawford. Moreover, Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 would ride the coattails of Floyd vs Broner thereby boosting mainstream interest in that bout as well.
