Canelo vs GGG trilogy? Please, not yetWritten by DeMarkus Jones
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is the new Middleweight Champion of the world after defeating Gennady Golovkin by majority decision.
The fight itself was all anyone could ask for with a lot of back and forth action. Both men had control at various points in the night and both were cut. Many hard punches were landed and it was a true action fight.
But, it is the result that angers most...
The official scores of 114-114 and 115-113 twice are an indication the fight was impossibly difficult to score. The fight was incredibly close and could have gone either way and fight fans and analysts are split in their assessment of the fight.
Many fans believe Golovkin should have won the fight and was robbed again, insisting the former thoroughly outboxed Canelo. However, there are those who think Canelo deserved his victory, insisting controlled the pace, took the fight to GGG and was never truly hurt in the fight.
I am not going to offer my opinion on the fight because there will be several articles that will do just that. Instead, I will state why a third fight does not need to happen.
There are many who are already clamoring for a third fight and I'm sure the third fight would do great business. These are two popular fighters with two passionate fan bases and they are rarely in boring fights. However, their styles just do not seem to mesh well. Both of their fights have been so close that you could argue that either man won.
After 24 rounds of boxing we do not have a definitive winner and we are no closer to knowing who is the better man than we were a year ago.
And odds are, if they were to fight again we would end up with another disputed outcome that will leave a bad taste in the mouth of all boxing fans.
For the sake of boxing fans everywhere, let's hope that they avoid each other for awhile. There are plenty of viable options out there for both men. Plus, people will begin to tire of seeing the same matches. I'm not saying they shouldn't fight again, it just doesn't need to happen anytime soon.
