Lara vs Martirosyan 2: Stats and highlights

Written by

Late replacement Vanes Martirosyan is a massive underdog against Gennady Golovkin in the May 5th Cinco de Mayo showdown.

The intangibles, such as Martirosyan's long layoff, the fact he will have not had ample time to prepare for this fight, and his lack of big-fight experience at middleweight don't bode well for Vanes' chances.

However, if there's any +1000 underdog worth betting on, it's Vanes Martirosyan because he's performed well against elite opposition and is experienced, well-schooled and durable.

Most recent bout: UD 12 by Erislandy Lara, May 21, 2016

Nearly two years ago, Vanes and Erislandy fought for the second time and it was another tough battle. In the end, Lara would win by the scores of 115-112 and 116-111 twice to retain his WBA junior middleweight. However, some media scored it 114-113 for Martirosyan.

(Of note, the referee deducted one point from Martirosyan for low blow in the 11th round)

People had their opinions of this fight but, either way, it wasn't a robbery as there were more than a few rounds that could have been scored either way.

Martirosyan (then 36-3-1, 21 KO) worked the body well, early and often, and it appeared to slow Lara as the fight went on.

A southpaw, Lara (then 23-2-2, 13 KO) used his straight left effectively to land eye-catching shots. And those shots, more visible to the casual observer than wicked body blows, may have been the difference in the fight.

According to CompuBox, Lara out-landed the more aggressive Martirosyan 162-94 while the latter threw 50 more punches, 474-424. Lara's connect rate was 38 percent while Martirosyan's was 20 percent.

Martirosyan - $400,000

"He's the champion, he always has that edge. I had to do enough to win, and I thought I did," Martirosyan said, adding that he'll fight anyone.

Surely Martirosyan knows in order to win against a popular champion like Gennady Golovkin, he’ll have to dominate the fight over 12 rounds, score a few knockdowns or KO GGG.
