Jacobs vs Sulecki prediction: Showcase city

Written by

There's an old philosophy in boxing that basically says: "Never judge a fella based on an awesome losing performance."

Remember when Razor Ruddock had those two electrifying, losing performances against Mike Tyson in 1991 and folks predicted Ruddock would be the 'next best thing' in boxing?

Some fighters match-up well with great opponents and are capable of giving that opponent a 'run for his money' while, at the same time, falling short of winning.

Is Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KO) a rising star or simply a quality middleweight?

Last year, we saw him fight on nearly even terms with arguably the best fighter in boxing, Gennady Golovkin. In fact, it was the first time we'd seen Gennady look like anything else but a human wrecking machine.

Tonight, Jacobs faces Maciej Sulecki (26-0, 10 KO) in New York City. And while this fight won't tell us if Jacobs is a top pound-for-pound fighter, there's reason to believe Jacobs is the real deal.

Let's not forget, he stopped Peter Quillin in the opening stanza. He's also the same young man who impressively dispatched the slippery Sergio Mora, a fighter who's capable of making any elite pugilist look bad.

No, Daniel Jacobs isn't a big star but he's been doing some big things. And if Daniel can turn tonight's bout into a showcase instead of simply piling up points for an easy win, he'll increase his stock and boost his leverage for securing a superfight with the winner of Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez 2.

Jacobs vs Sulecki prediction
Look for Jacobs to make amends for his last bout, a rather uneventful UD win over Luis Arias in November. Coming off the Golovkin fight, fans had expected more from Daniel and they'll get it tonight.

"He's [Jacobs] primed and ready to go," Daniel's nutritionist, former world champion Chris Algieri, told FightHype.

"This is a perfect fight for him to perform and drop that hammer."

It's not only important that Daniel retains his top contender status, he must turn his brand into 'must see TV.'

Tonight, Jacobs boasts advantages in nearly every category. He has the deeper amateur pedigree, a five inch reach advantage and a presumed advantage in punching power. Moreover, Daniel's level of opposition is much stronger than Sulecki's.

And while Daniel's critics will mention the KO loss to Dmitry Pirog, that was ages ago. Daniel is a different fighter today and most of us - including me - heavily stressed that heading into Golovkin vs Jacobs last year.

Sulecki's newfound power: If there's one thing Team Jacobs should be particularly wary of, it's this stat:

Although Sulecki boasts just 10 KOs in 26 fights, he's stopped 7 of his last 8 foes inside the distance, including then-hot prospect Hugo Centeno Jr.

Something changed... And Sulecki will have more punching power than his record suggests.

Prediction: Look for Jacobs to try to make a statement tonight and stop his foe somewhere after six rounds.
