Canelo vs Triple G rematch prediction: Golovkin needs KO, insists BJS

Written by

Prior to last September's Canelo vs Triple superfight, we stated Golovkin, in order to win, would have to do a little more to win than his foe and insisted he wouldn't win a decision in a "close fight"... And we were right to a degree.

To many, Gennady appeared to separate himself from Canelo yet the fight was ruled a draw by the judges. It wasn't extraordinarily close but, in all fairness, Golovkin certainly didn't dominate either.

Canelo vs Triple G rematch
Fresh off his impressive win over David Lemieux, WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) believes middleweight Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) needs to a knockout to be victorious against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) in their upcoming rematch, should it happen in May.

"Golovkin must go out there and knock him out, because if they go to the cards they will give the fight to Canelo, even if he loses," Saunders told Fox Deportes.

Oh the A-side

Canelo Alvarez was the A-side fighter last September and will be again should the fighters meet again in May.

The A-side fighter, of course, is the fighter who generates greater interest among the masses. He usually earns more money than his foe but is not always the champion, the favorite or the more skilled or accomplished. Nevertheless, his team usually has the leverage when choosing the fight date, venue, size and type of glove, ring size and etc.

In life, perception often trumps reality so star power means a lot in boxing. And the A-side fighter will usually get the benefit of the doubt in close, hard-to-call rounds.

Joe Louis vs Jersey Joe Walcott I, Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton III, Sugar Ray Leonard VS Marvin Hagler, Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Sturm, Ward vs Kovalev I, De La Hoya vs Whitaker, Ali vs Shavers, Marciano vs LaStarza I and more....

In fact, both Canelo and Golovkin have arguably benefitted from being the A-side in their razor close decision wins over Erislandy Lara and Daniel Jacobs, respectively.
