Golovkin vs Brook prediction: Just 5 rounds?

Written by

Can a top 3 welterweight deafeat the world's best middleweight?

In less than three weeks, unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), currently on a 22 fight KO streak, faces surging, red hot Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs), the world's top rated welterweight.

Golovkin vs Brook pairs two undefeated, top-level pound-for-pound fighters, and consensus says the smaller man will not be able to brawl with larger, stronger Gololkin. It's believed the welterweight, in order to win, must use his perceived speed advantage and his legs to outwork the aggressive middleweight champion.

But regardless of how good Kell's legs are, he's going to have to earn Golovkin's respect and make him think twice before transitioning into 'seek and destroy' mode.

Will Brook be able to keep Gennady at bay and use his legs and operate from a safe distance?

Most experts say, 'No.'

Regardless of how good Kell's legs are, he's going to have to earn Golovkin's respect and make him think twice before transitioning into 'seek and destroy' mode. If Brook can't jolt Golovkin early, it may be only a matter of time before the former gets stopped within the distance.

Moreover, it'll be almost impossible for Brook to thwart Golovkin's attacks completely. The bigger man, at worse, will connect on glancing blows.

So what does Golovkin, himself, predict?

"I know that Kell is a good fighter, but I know my style and I am ready," Golovkin recently told Sky Sports News HQ.

"I am very interested in what Kell will do. He will not fight like a street fighter because that would be a very short fight. If he is moving and dancing, maybe longer because I know I need time."

Able Sanchez, Gennady's trainer, told BoxingScene.com last week his fighter will KO Brook within five rounds.

"I have worked with a lot of heavyweights who were big, big punchers, but with Gennady, it hurts when he hits you," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com last week.

Golovkin, in sparring, has been known to hurt much bigger men, including light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

The onus will be on Kell Brook to orchestrate a flawless performance through all tweleve rounds.
