Floyd Mayweather vs Danny Garcia in September? 'Money May' looking for No. 50

Written by

Rumors abound again about a Floyd Mayweather comeback...

But this one should be taken more seriously than the rest.

British promoter Eddie Hearn told BoxingScene.com earlier this week that he would like to see his fighter, red hot IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, face his WBC peer, Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KO).

However, Hearn suggested Brook vs Garcia may not happen anytime soon, hinting Danny's team is negotiating with Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KO).

"Garcia in my opinion will fight Floyd Mayweather next, in September," Hearn told BoxingScene.com."That could rule him out of the equation [to face Kell Brook in 2016]."

Given Hearn is an insider who has no reason to impart half-baked details about prospects for a bout that wouldn't involve him, fight fans and the media should take notice.

Why Mayweather vs Garcia?

Floyd is one win away from breaking Rocky Marciano's revered 49-0 record. No world champion has retired unbeaten and untied, and with more than 49 wins. Should Mayweather retire at 50-0, it would serve as a new pinnacle of sorts for the Sweet Science.

As for opponents for Floyd to break the record against, Garcia fits the mold. He's young, undefeated, has a solid reputation and wears the WBC belt once held by Floyd. And stylistically, Garcia's limitations may be a perfect fit for Floyd Mayweather's quickness and overall skills.

Danny struggled against the awkward Mauricio Harrera and appeared to be clearly outboxed by Lamont Peterson in the first half of their bout last year.

If Floyd Mayweather returns to face Garcia, the former should be credited for attempting to break the record by defeating a young, tough, undefeated champion. That stated, fans would rather see Floyd rematch Manny Pacquiao or jaunt to middleweight to face unified champion Gennady Golovkin.

Will we see Mayweather vs Garcia in September? If so, are you interested?
