Gennady Golovkin: GGG's Trainer says Andre Ward's team is 'all talk'

Written by

One of the biggest potential fights in boxing, Andre 'SOG' Ward versus Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, probably won't happen anytime soon as fans attempt to learn which side is to blame.

Yesterday, EsNews caught up with Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, who offered his side of the Ward vs Golovkin fight saga.

"They [Team Ward] sent Tom [Loeffler] an email with an offer to fight after we signed the [David] Lemieux fight."

Loeffler, of course, is Golovkin's agent.

"...First of all, after we signed the the Lemieux fight, we had the Canelo vs Cotto fight on the line... [Waiting to negotiate with the winner."]

"We're like 2 or 3 fights ahead of this and they send an offer... which is kind of [like] saying you don't want the fight."

"They had plenty of opportunity way before that."

"That's the same thing BJ Saunders did after we signed the fight with [Dominic] Wade for this mandatory and he's talkin' like he wanted to fight us but he never wanted to fight us.

"It just seems these guys just talk. Just talk."

For quite some time, Sanchez has been complaining about the lack of big name options for his prized pugilist, Gennady Golovkin.

"At one point, I was very confident that Canelo would fight Gennady if he beat Cotto," stated the Big Bear Lake based boxing coach in January 2015.

"But Oscar keeps saying 'In a couple of years...in a couple of years.'. And when he says that, I think people have to take it for what he's saying. He's not going to risk his cash cow getting knocked out by Golovkin."

"And If Cotto wins, I doubt Cotto steps into the ring with Gennady. We want to fight the biggest names of the sport, but they just don't want to fight us."

But back then, according to HBO commentator Jim Lampley, the universally recognized Super Middleweight champion presumably insisted he'd have no issue facing Gennady Golovkin.

"A representative from Andre Ward's camp sent me a note stating that Andre wants to fight Gennady Golovkin," declared Lampley at a press conference for Golovkin vs Martin Murray which subsequently took place February 21, 2015.

"He'll fight him anywhere, anyplace, anytime. A fight against Andre Ward in Southern California would be very marketable. Ward's lawyer, Josh Dubin, sent me an email saying that Andre will fight him wherever."

So who is right?

Who knows?

Given Ward was on a hiatus from boxing, his team probably didn't want to commit Andre to facing a threat like Gennady Golovkin until they saw their fighter perform a few times in the ring. However, it seems a deal with light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev was made rather quickly so perhaps Sanchez has a point.

If Ward defeats Kovalev, public demand may create the groundswell for Ward vs Golovkin.

Sooner or later, someone, whether Canelo, Ward, Gilberto Ramirez or another big name, will have to face Golovkin.
