Canelo vs Khan: Amir faster than Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao?

Written by

When lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (46-1, 32 KO) faces elite welterweight Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KO)  in May, the former's size and naturally larger frame may not work to his advantage.

Mayweather vs Canelo (2013)
Who remembers when Canelo fought a considerably smaller Floyd Mayweather two and a half years ago?

"It was simple: I couldn't catch him,". "He was very elusive. He's a great fighter,"Alvarez said after losing a clear-cut decision.

In that bout, Mayweather put on a clinic landing 232 out of 505 punches (46%) compared to Canelo who landed only 117 out of 526 punches (22%).

Floyd showed superior speed and technique, frustrating Alvarez round after round and not allowing the Mexican to sustain a consistent attack.

Canelo vs Lara (2014)
And who remembers Canelo vs Erislandy Lara in 2014?

Some insist Lara gave Canelo a boxing lesson while others assert the Cuban's incessant retreating cost him points in the scoring, especially in the middle rounds where he appeared to be in survival mode.

Although Alvarez would win a tight, semi-controversial decision, Lara's superior speed, effective combinations and brilliant footwork had Canelo flailing and missing badly at times, and ultimately forced the Mexican into deep waters.

Will Amir Khan's hand and foot speed be a factor in May?
Jose "Chepo" Reynoso, Alvarez's trainer, insists Team Canelo is not taking this fight - or Khan's speed - lightly.

"We chose Khan because it's one of the most attractive fights out there at the moment," Reynoso told ESPN Deportes. "Khan is a very fast fighter who neither Floyd Mayweather nor Manny Pacquiao wanted to give a chance, and we're doing it."

"... His speed can be dangerous, but Khan is not only fast, he's a thinking fighter," Reynoso added.

How fast is Khan?
When asked in 2011 to dissect a match-up between Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, Jamie Kavanagh, then a sparring partner for both fighters, offered some insight into Khan's mind-numbing reflexes.

"Amir Khan would knock you out with like 6 or 7 punches...," Kavanagh told Koncrete Jungle.

"... Manny can hit you with 3 or 4. Manny has a lot more power."

"[But] Amir has a lot more speed than Manny Pacquiao," he insisted.

Keep in mind, Kavangh, a prizefighter himself,  was a stablemate of Pacquiao and Khan when all three were under the tutlelage of Freddie Roach and spent a lot of time in the ring with both combatants.

De La Hoya and Schaefer said what?
When asked for his opinion about a then-possible Mayweather vs Khan bout, former Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESNewsReporting in December 2013:

"I am going to go on record and say Amir Khan is faster than Floyd Mayweather. No question about it.

"If it [Mayweather vs Khan] would happen, I give Amir Khan a helluva chance," he insisted.

Adding legitimacy to Schaefer's statement, fight legend Oscar De Hoya told RING Magazine a year later, "Right now, I’d say that Amir Khan is faster than both Mayweather and Pacquiao. He looked explosive (in defeating Devon Alexander) tonight."

"Now I know why Floyd Mayweather doesn’t want to fight Amir Khan. I wouldn’t have wanted to fight him."
