GGG vs Lemieux: Will power be the great equalizer for the Canadian?

Written by

WBA "Super and WBC " Interim" 160 lb champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0 30 KO) and Canadian slugger David Lemieux (34-2 31KO), the IBF Middleweight titlist, will face each other October 17.

Golovkin vs Lemieux will be broadcast on HBO PPV and will take place in New York at Madison Square Garden.

The boxing world is buzzing with enthusiasm - and for good reason.

Two champions.... Two knockout artists... Two warriors....

Combined, the fighters are 67-2 with 61 knockouts and both men are believed to be in their prime. Simply put, who cannot be excited about this fight?

Excitement abounds whenever two high-profile knockout artists collide because the tide of a fight can turn in an instant and there's always drama.

However, unlike most of the recent high-profile PPV battles, there is, or at least should be, a decisive favorite come October 17. On paper, GGG vs Lemieux is not a 50-50 fight.

Lemieux has lost twice (once via knockout) while Golovkin is not only unbeaten but has faced better opposition. In fact, the fighter dubbed GGG has steamrolled everyone in his path.

Gennady has the deeper amateur pedigree and presumably boasts superior technical skills. Moreover, David won't have an advantage in size nor speed, and GGG has recorded a bloodcurdling 20 consecutive knockouts while two of Lemieux's last five fights have gone the distance.

On paper, Golovkin should be the decisive favorite but punching power is the great equalizer in boxing.

After four rounds of GGG vs Martin Murray, the result was, for all intents and purposes, not in question.

What makes Golovkin vs Lemieux so intriguing is the Canadian, unlike Murray, will be a knockout threat to the final bell regardless of the complexion of the fight.

David, like GGG, boasts considerable power and will serve as Golovkin's most threatening opponent to date.

Will David be able to nullify Golovkin's perceived advantages by giving GGG a dose of his own medicine?
