Gennady Golovkin: Ready to face Andre WardWritten by Joshua Broom
According to ESPN, WBA "super" and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0 30KO) has told his promoter, K2 managing director Tom Loeffler, he is willing to face Andre Ward this fall.
The 31 year old Ward (21-0 15 KO), after a 19 month hiatus, orchestrated a decisive 9th round stoppage over Paul Smith on June 20th. The lineal 168 lb champion, Ward, of course, is now signed with media mogul Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports.
Loeffler explained the conditions under which Team Golovkin would be willing to make the fight.
“GGG is now clearly the ‘A’ side yet Ward still would want to dictate terms, which makes no sense,” Loeffler told ESPN.
“GGG would fight Ward on a 50-50 basis, the best 160-pounder versus the best 168-pounder [at] 164 [and] a 50-50 split on all proceeds."
"But it seems like Ward needs more tuneup fights.”
Neither Andre Ward nor anyone from his camp issued an immediate statement concerning Loeffler's comments.
