Devon Alexander vs Diego Chaves on tap

Written by

An IBF Welterweight title eliminator bout between Diego Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs) and Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) has been agreed upon at IBF headquarters thus avoiding a purse bid.

The Alexander vs Chaves winner will claim his stake as the IBF 147lb mandatory challenger to champion Kell Brook.

What's most interesting is that Chaves, who fights for Bob Arum's Top Rank, is taking on Al Haymon-advised fighter in Devon Alexander. Earlier this week, it was announced the two managerial entities - controlled by Arum and Haymon - are embroiled in a bitter lawsuit.

But despite the outside-the-ring drama, Alexander vs Chaves should be an excellent fight.

Chaves, rated No. 6 by the IBF, is coming off of a 12 round draw with Tim Bradley in December. And while most observers felt that Chaves should have lost the fight, it was still close on most scorecards nonetheless.

Former titilist Devon Alexander, in his most recent bout, dropped a lopsided decision to former unified 140 lb titilist Amir Khan.

The winner of the Alexander vs Chaves title eliminator, which has a tentative fight date for September, could face the victor of the proposed Kell Brook vs Brandon Rios IBF Welterweight title bout should the latter take place.

I currently reside in Rome Georgia and have been published as a writer along with being an avid life long fan of the "Sweet Science" chiefly among other sports.

Among my favorite memories as a child include staying up late to watch ESPN and USA network boxing coverage and then watching the big premium weekend fights while visiting my grandparents.

As an adult, I watch all the fights a through z and consider myself somewhat of a modern historian.

My favorite fighters include the late Arturo Gatti, Kostya Tszyu, Evander Holyfield and Manny Pacquiao just to name a few.

I'm excited to see the sport I love back on primetime network t.v. and am optimistic about the future of boxing.
