Floyd Mayweather issued challenge by world's most destructive boxer

Written by

On May 2, unbeaten lineal welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) earned a twelve round unanimous decision over then-WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) in the highest grossing fight in boxing history.

So who will Floyd face in September in what will be billed as the 38 year old's last fight?

Many hardcore fans would love nothing more than see Mayweather fight unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a 154 lb jr middleweight showdown.

Recently, Golovkin, who has knocked out his last 20 opponents, told TMZ a bout with Mayweather would be his "dream fight" and hinted he'd destroy Floyd.

Violent and unrelenting, Golovkin is the quintessential knockout artist and crowd-pleaser and a Floyd vs Golovkin showdown would be box office smash with the sport's enthusiasts.

So, will Mayweather vs Golovkin happen in September?

Although Gennady insists he'd move down from 160 lbs to 154 lbs to fight Floyd, the "dream" fight is extremely unlikely because the risk far exceeds the rewards for Floyd as the latter could earn more money facing a less-threatening opponent, such as Miguel Cotto.

In addition, there would also be a considerable size difference, even if Golovkin dropped weight. Gennady would be a big super welterweight while Floyd, as we saw in his bout against Canelo Alvarez, is tiny as a 154 pound fighter.

Mayweather isn't scared to fight Golovkin but, at this moment, such a bout would be ludicrous from a business perspective because Gennady is not yet popular enough in the mainstream to generate the uber high-end revenue required to pique Floyd's interest.

Even prior to Mayweather vs Pacquiao, some experts and insiders insisted the more intriguing bout was Floyd vs Gennady. And despite the public's disdain over the 'Fight of the Century' last month, a Mayweather vs Golovkin showdown, for the hardcore fight fan, is every bit as mouthwatering as Floyd vs Manny was prior to May 2.
