Chelsea FC and boxing? Football stadium to host biggest heavyweight fight in years?

Written by

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea wants to host the fall showdown between lineal and concensus WBO/IBO/WBA/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko and mandatory challenger Tyson Fury.

An affluent area in central London, the location is the home of the famous Chelsea Football Club (Chelsea FC).

The proposed site, Stamford Bridge, boasts a capacity of 42,000 and serves as the playing field for Chelsea FC.

Stamford Bridge has been used as a venue for England international matches, FA Cup Finals, FA Cup semi-finals and Charity Shield games. It has also hosted numerous other sports, such as cricket, rugby union, speedway, greyhound racing, baseball and American football, and is well-suited to host a boxing event as momentous as Klitschko vs Fury.

There is concern, however, that a big fight would ruin the playing surface; something that would be a highly detrimental during peak football season.

"If Klitschko ever steps in the ring with Tyson Fury, he's going to be in serious trouble," stated Teddy Atlas, a former trainer and ESPN fight commentator, in December when the Klitschko vs Fury match-up was gaining traction.

And the arrogant prizefighter also believes that he is indeed the man who can finally hand Klitschko his first loss in over ten years.

"Emanuel [Steward] even said to Wladimir when I was there that I was the heir to his throne," Fury said, following his win over rival Dereck Chisora in December.

"He referred to me as the king in waiting. And here I am two years later, knocking on that door. So if he wants a fight, let's get it on."

"If not, put your title in the bind...vacate it."

Klitschko vs Fury, should it happen this fall, will be broadcast on HBO in the United States.
