Floyd Mayweather next fight: Lucas Matthysse a great option, but...

Written by

Fresh off winning the biggest fight of his 19 year pro career and one of the most significant in the entire history of the  sport, Floyd Mayweather is contemplating next fight options.

“I don’t know at this particular time,” Mayweather said about his September opponent via SiriusXM’s Shade 45 Radio.

“But I’m sure we’re going to find a style of guy that’s going to push me for the last fight. When I go out, I’m going to go out with a bang.”

Does Floyd really mean that?

At this point and for relative chump change, it would seem pointless to face a real and legitimate threat like Gennady Golovkin. But if Floyd really is seeking a pressure fighter for his next and last fight, there are still a few options; most notably jr welterweight knockout artist Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs).

Last month, Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) electrified viewers, delivering the blockbuster fans were hoping for. In the end, Matthysse won a razor-thin majority decision by the scores of 114-114, and 115-113 (twice).

The fight was a ratings success garnering 1.243 million viewing households and peaking at 1.38 million.

Although Mayweather vs Matthysse won't resonate with casual fans, it would likely garner a solid one million pay-per-view buys off the strength of the sport's hardcore junkies and Lucas' stock.

Problem: Floyd's next fight must be on Showtime and Lucas is signed with Golden Boy Promotions whose fighters are showcased on rival HBO.

Unless a deal can be negotiated, Matthysse has a greater chance of facing Manny Pacquiao, another HBO fighter, than Floyd Mayweather.

Regardless of who Floyd selects, his next opponent will be hungry, disciplined and in the best shape of his life come fight time. He'll train like he's never trained before, knowing a win over Floyd would secure him financial stability and boxing immortality.

After beating Manny Pacquiao, can Floyd, who admits he no longer loves the sport, get motivated for another tough challenge?
