Canelo vs Kirkland: “I want to be able to smell Canelo’s breath during the fight”

Written by

Although most within the boxing community are consumed with the highly publicized “Fight of the Century” between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, one of boxing’s most enticing match-ups will be taking place the following weekend in Houston, Texas.

On May 9, Mexican favorite Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be taking on his most dangerous assignment to date in terms of punching power, “The Mandingo Warrior” James Kirkland.

And while most Sports Books currently display the sharp-shooter from Jalisco as a “3 to 1” betting favorite, the Austin, Texas native has the potential to put any fighter’s lights out with one short, compact left hand.

Kirkland believes his opponent understands exactly what he’ll be up against on fight night.

“I know he (Canelo) is pushing himself to the next level because he knows this isn’t going to be a push-over,” claims the 31 year old fight veteran. “I know a lot of fight fans and certain people don’t believe this is going to be a difficult fight for Canelo. But he knows just as well as I do that it’s work time.”

Despite being inactive since December of 2013, as well as switching head trainers in the interim, the heavy handed southpaw believes he has the tools to take Alvarez to the brink on May 9.

“Fight fans in attendance should get to their seats immediately,” insists the perennial contender. “It’s going to be a war right from the opening bell. I want to give the fans the fight that they want, and I’m going to bring it. I want to show Canelo what I’m all about.”

Kirkland’s new team, comprised of head trainer Rick Morones Jr., strength and conditioning expert Bremond “Bay Bay” McClinton, and assistant trainer Gerald Tucker Sr., has been busy evaluating the abilities of their May 9th adversary and devising a suitable gameplan at the Team Morones Boxing Club in San Antonio, Texas.

Because Canelo possesses extremely quick reflexes and is indeed a brilliant counter puncher from mid to long range, James knows exactly what he has to do to be successful on fight night.

“Canelo is the total package in the ring,” states the “Mandingo Warrior”. “But I see certain things that I can take advantage of on fight night. At the end of the day, I want to be able to smell Canelo’s breath."

"I want to be that close to him…like a sweater. I want to bring that kind of fight to him from round one to round twelve…if it goes that far.”

“I believe in my power and I believe in my ability. I know when I touch any fighter a certain way, it’s lights out. So I plan on touching Canelo early and often. I know I’m going to eventually take control of the fight, I just have to stay active and the fight will go according to plan.”

“I’m excited. I want to show the fans the best James Kirkland on May 9,”

The scheduled twelve round main event will take place at the home of MLB’s Houston Astros, “Minute Maid Park” in Houston, Texas, and will be televised immediately following the May 9 replay of “Mayweather vs. Pacquiao” on HBO.
