Canelo Alvarez next fight: James Kirkland signs, Cotto scrap official

Written by
Golden Boy Promotions and Team Alvarez weren't kidding.
On Saturday night, GBP founder Oscar De La Hoya announced an agreement could not be made to stage the superfight many in boxing were so very much anticipating, Miguel Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez.

"“We set a deadline on our latest offer sent to Cotto and Gaby (Penagarciano) on Friday night, and they refused the offer,” stated Oscar to various members of the boxing press on Saturday, January 17. "

“"Our focus is now on locking down an opponent within the next couple of days for Canelo to fight on May 2nd.”"

And according to a close source, explosive KO artist James Kirkland (31-1, 27KO) signed on the dotted line today.

Canelo vs Kirkland shouldn't be altogether surprising because it's a match-up over two years in the making.

In Summer 2012 in the wake of the Paul Williams motorcycle tragedy, a deal had been struck for Canelo vs Kirkland later that fall but James pulled pulled out citing an injury. Kirkland was again mentioned as possible next opponent for Alvarez this past July, days after Canelo's win over Erislandy Lara.

So while the the selection of James Kirkland and San Antonio shouldn't be a shocker, other details may take some by surprise.

Canelo and Golden Boy plan to hold the event on May 2nd (Cinco de Mayo Weekend) despite - or to spite - Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao which is currently being negotiated to take place the same night.

... And Canelo vs Kirkland will be broadcast on free HBO.

"They've already brought the Canelo fight to my attention, and I'm definitely interested in this fight," states Kirkland, owner of an 85 percent knockouts-to-fights ratio, in July.

"I've been staying in shape...training and working with other fighters. I really hope that we can lock this fight in so the fight fans can see me against Canelo..."
