Canelo vs Cotto: Who needs who most?

Written by
Teams for Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are still negotiating terms for a potential superfight between the boxing stars.

And according to sources, the camps are still relatively far apart on purse splits. If those reports are accurate, both sides will likely have to concede a bit more than initially planned to make Cotto vs Canelo a reality in 2015.

While it's debatable which fighter is the bigger draw, one fighter clearly needs this fight more than his foe.

One warrior can retire tomorrow a legend, the other cannot. One warrior is proven while the other simply has potential.

A future first ballot hall of famer and the current WBC and RING Magazine/lineal middleweight champion, Cotto is apparently looking to be the decisive bread winner of the two; And it's not entirely surprising why...

"Canelo needs that fight. After losing to [Floyd] Mayweather, he could not return to the level he wanted or deserved to be at after [winning] two fights [with Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo]," recently stated World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman via El Universal.MX Desportes.

"He needs to take a risk like Cotto for the public to recognize him as one of the greats."

Credit to Canelo Alvarez for taking calculated risks against Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout - and succeeding. But neither Trout nor Lara have Cotto's name or credentials, and some still insist Alvarez was gifted the decision over Lara, an elite opponent by any standard.

Canelo dearly wants to be on the same level as Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather and Wladimir Klitschko, not only in terms of drawing power but in respect and overall stature in the sport.

And while Alvarez can reach the pinnacle of boxing in a few years by toiling against quality but lesser-known opposition or waiting for another mainstream star to be cultivated, a win over Miguel Cotto may bring him instant gratification.

Team Canelo is undoubtedly hoping a win over Miguel Cotto does for Alvarez's career what De La Hoya vs Mayweather did for Floyd's.

Some say Canelo is already a bigger draw than Cotto. Even if true, the future first ballot hall of famer has solid leverage because Canelo needs him more than he needs Canelo.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and Cotto vs Canelo represents the straightest of all lines in Alvarez's quest to sit atop boxing's highest mountain.
