Canelo Alvarez: I won't "step away" from Cinco de Mayo fight

Is Floyd Mayweather's firm hold on Cinco de Mayo weekend coming to an end?
If popular Mexican jr middleweight 'Canelo' Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) has his way, boxing's 'holiest of holies' weekend will be his.

Canelo recently elaborated on his next fight via Mexican radio:

"I said I was planning to fight [next] in May and I intend to do so. [May 2] is a very important date for me and I'm not going to move from that date."

"These Mexican dates are for us. I want to return these dates to us," Canelo said.

Alvarez's team is still negotiating with Miguel Cotto's representatives on a potential superfight but regardless of who Canelo will fight next,he insists May 2 belongs to him, and should be reserved for Mexican fighters going forward.

What's so important about Cinco de Mayo?

Spanish for 'Fifth of May, Cinco de Mayo is a holiday held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is observed as a celebration of Mexican heritage. Cinco de Mayo also commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

"It commemorates the outstanding, courageous dstand of a lot of Mexican civilians who turned back the French Imperial Army, and it's a significant holiday in Mexico and among Mexican Americans who live in the United States," recently stated promoter Bob Arum.

In the U.S. and Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a festive time, spawing parties, parades, music and festivals. And while people of Mexican decent are more likely to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, many Americans with no Mexican heritage at all have adopted the holiday.

Given boxing's immense popularity among Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, Cinco de Mayo and boxing go hand-in-hand, kind of like fireworks and the Fourth of July, and macaroni and cheese.

As a result, that weekend is the most desirable in all of boxing and has proven quite lucrative.

Should high-profile boxing cards on that day always showcase a fighter of Mexican heritage in its main event?

For the last several years, Floyd Mayweather has fought on Cinco de Mayo weekend and is targeting May 2, 2015 for his next fight.
