Manny Pacquiao, not Miguel Cotto? The hottest athlete among Puerto Ricans in 2014

Written by
It's no surprise a boxer finished as the most searched for athlete in Google Puerto Rico this year.

Puerto Ricans love their boxing and take it very seriously.

This year, the trendiest athlete in Google Puerto Rico was obviously future hall of famer Miguel Cotto, right?

Wrong.

Manny Pacquiao, a Filipino and former Cotto foe, topped the list while Miguel finished at a modest No. 7.

Is Manny Pacquiao more popular than Miguel Cotto in the latter's native land?

Probably not, but the results from Google Trends forces one to think.

Pacquiao fought twice this year (April and November) while Cotto fought only once (June). And in Cotto's defense, the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao rumors reached unprecedented levels in the second half of 2014 thus making PacMan even more newsworthy.

For the above reasons, it's not a shocker Pacquiao finished so high. But why did Cotto finish behind five others? His June 7 fight with Sergio Martinez was one of the biggest fights of his career and, perhaps, one of his most gratifying.

After Miguel Cotto claimed the lineal middleweight title, rumblings escalated about the possibility of him facing Mexican star Canelo Alvarez as well as fellow fight legend Floyd Mayweather for a second time.

Should have Puerto Ricans been a bit more immersed in Cotto? Or perhaps the soft-spoken, gentlemanly Cotto prefers not to generate a lot of buzz outside the ring and simply lets his fists generate all of the news necessary inside it?

Will Miguel Cotto be the trendiest athlete in Google Puerto Rico in 2015?

Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc. that shows how often a particular search term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. In essence, Google Trends shows how new events impact search popularity.
