Floyd Mayweather vs Amir Khan in May? Manny Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas in April?

Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally going to step in the ring with Manny Pacquiao next year?

While rumors citing interest from CBS CEO and President Les Moonves' in brokering a deal with his client Floyd Mayweather Jr. and HBO super star Manny Pacquiao have caused a genuine buzz of optimism within the boxing community, most die-hard fight fans have cynically and understandably adopted an "I'll believe it when I see it" ideology.

If a fight between the two most popular fighters in the galaxy doesn't materialize, what should fight fans expect to see from both fighters?

Should popular British fighter Amir Khan prove to be victorious against Devon Alexander on December 13, many experts believe "Money May" will choose the lightning fast Briton as his first dance partner for 2015.

What about Manny Pacquiao?

While Pacquiao's head trainer has been adamant regarding his personal preference of universally recognized 140 pound champion Danny Garcia, it seems that Top Rank, Inc. may have an alternative plan in mind that includes a different WBA Junior Welterweight title holder.

Is it a mere coincidence that WBA "Regular" Champion Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9 KOs) has been featured on Manny's last two fight cards and has been pitted against two southpaw opponents?

According to head trainer and future Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr., there are no coincidences in boxing.

"To be the best in boxing, you have to beat the best in boxing. And the best on this side of the fence is Manny Pacquiao," claims the fighter formerly known as "Superman". "Jessie Vargas is ready to fight anybody, and I can see him getting in the ring with Manny Pacquiao next year."

The 25 year old Vegas resident showed much improvement in soundly defeating former WBC Lightweight title holder Antonio DeMarco this past weekend on the Pacquiao/Algieri undercard. The former WBA Heavyweight Champion gives his fighter a legitimate shot to not only get the coveted assignment, but also upset the Filipino icon.

"Jessie is a natural born fighter," claims Roy Jones Jr. "He won his title off of pure heart. He didn't go out there and blow anyone away, and he didn't look spectacular doing it."

"But he got it done because he really wanted it. When a fighter has that much desire, anything is possible and he shouldn't be underestimated. That's why I originally decided to work with Jessie Vargas."

Although the 45 year old fighter/trainer/commentator believes that Vargas is definitely in the running for a fight with Manny in 2015, Jones also genuinely believes that Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is still a realistic possibility.

"I know there is a real possibility that Mayweather/Pacquiao could still happen," insists the all time great fighter. "Floyd Mayweather is not only the best fighter in the world, he's also one of the most competitive fighters in the world, and I know he's tired of all of the Pacquiao talk. So I do believe a fight with Manny could be on the horizon."
