Floyd Mayweather: Will 'Money May' spoil the plans of Golden Boy and HBO in 2015?

Written by
Although former WBC/WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions were forced to cancel a proposed Texas showdown between the newly signed HBO attraction and former IBF Welterweight titlist Joshua Clottey, all parties involved remain optimistic about a red hot match-up between the popular Mexican fighter and four division world champion Miguel Angel Cotto taking place on "Cinco de Mayo weekend" of 2015.
Golden Boy president and Hall of Fame fighter Oscar de la Hoya recently spoke to "USA Today Sports" about the probable super fight becoming a reality.

"When Cotto/Canelo gets made, I see no reason why it can't come close to the two million mark in PPV buys," stated the Golden Boy of boxing. "Yes, you have to give credit to Miguel Cotto, he's a great fighter. But when you bring the Canelo factor and it brings PPV fights to a whole new level."

Even though all parties involved seem to be on board the "Canelo/Cotto" express at this point in time, elite level trainer Ronnie Shields warns the boxing community not to underestimate the influence and business savvy of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"Don't be surprised if everyone sees Floyd fighting Cotto again before Canelo gets the opportunity," claims the Houston, Texas, based boxing coach.

"Now this is just me thinking out loud. But ask yourself, what can Floyd do to disrupt the plans of HBO, Golden Boy Promotions, and Top Rank in taking away that coveted 'Cinco de Mayo' weekend fight date next year?"

"Go and steal Cotto from them. To me it makes a lot of sense."

While Coach Ronnie's theory is an interesting one, it's debatable whether or not the Caguas superstar would be willing to work with Showtime Sports and Mayweather Promotions once again. Especially when one considers the recent efforts of HBO and Top Rank in resurrecting Miguel Cotto's once troubled career.

While working outside of the Top Rank promotional umbrella, the 33 year old fight veteran suffered two consecutive losses at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin "No Doubt" Trout in 2012. After making the strategic decision to partner with Bob Arum's promotional entity once again, Cotto put together two impressive knock-out victories against Delvin Rodriguez, and most recently Sergio Martinez, which consequently placed the current WBC Middleweight Champion in the pole position of the PPV discussion.

Mr. Shields believes that loyalty won't be a determining factor at this stage in the future Hall of Fame fighter's career.

"Miguel Cotto only has two fights left in his career," states the prolific fight trainer. "So why would he care if he works with HBO or Top Rank? He has his own promotional company. He's not under contract with Top Rank or HBO. He made the decision to work with Top Rank, Inc. for his last two fights because he wanted to do something with HBO."

"But do you really think Miguel Cotto would turn down bigger money to work with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Showtime Sports in the twilight of his career? If Mayweather Promotions offers him more than the ten million that is on the table for a fight with Canelo, do you really think Miguel will turn that down?"

"No way...no way."

But with Floyd already receiving a guaranteed $32 million for his efforts, would Showtime Sports and Mayweather Promotions be able to guarantee a larger purse than the proposed $10 million to fight Canelo Alvarez on HBO PPV?

Oscar de la Hoya and company doesn't believe a second Cotto/Mayweather bout would generate enough buzz and PPV buys to justify a larger payday.

"Outside of Mayweather versus Pacquiao, I believe that a Canelo/Cotto match-up is the biggest fight that you can make in boxing today," claims the five division world champion. "I know that Cotto/Canelo can fill that void and take boxing to a whole new level. That's the fight that I want to see. It's a huge fight."

Trainer Ronnie Shields: "A rematch between Mayweather and Cotto would look exactly like the first fight
