Canelo Alvarez: Next fight vs Clottey cancelled

Written by
It's anyone's guess if Canelo Alvarez will remain true to his word (as well as those of his promoter) and not subject his legions of fans to another pay per view bout anytime soon.

The red headed anomaly from the land of the tricolor indeed cranked out an impressive two fight grind in 2014 with impressive wins over Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara, respectively.

Alas, just when many likely thought that the fighter from Guadalajara, Jalisco, MX would step out of the annoying pattern which sadly characterizes the two poster chaps of boxing (fighting but twice a year at most), Golden Boy Promotions issued a press release less than thirty minutes ago which read as follows:

"Due to a persistent ankle injury, Canelo Alvarez must withdraw from his December 6 bout. He thanks his fans for their support and looks forward to big things in 2015 on HBO."

First off, let us here within the boxing world wish him a speedy recovery and the knowledge that movement equals healing. Hand it to Canelo for at least the desire to make himself a man of the people who understands the need to help his public admirers save a little cash around holiday time.

Some of us would have likely welcomed the "free" (if premium cable is considered as such) telecast, especially if we were among the group who shelled out close to sixty dollars to see Manny Pacquiao take on Chris Algieri.

At the same time, there will no doubt be the "magic bullet" pack of theorists who claim that this is but a stalling tactic to cut a corner en route to a huge money payout in May of 2015.

There's no way that the weekends which are closest to either Cinco de Mayo or Deis y Seis de Septiembre would ever include Canelo Alvarez and standard HBO in the same sentence. Oh well. More than a few weren't exactly doing the centipede over the thought of Alvarez squaring off with Joshua "Hitter" Clottey.

HBO showcases several quality fight cards per year, but maybe they needed another minute to think this over.
