Canelo Alvarez: Next fight against Erislandy Lara July 12?

According to sources close to both camps, a deal is currently being negotiated for a potential super fight in the Super Welterweight division between former WBA/WBC Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and current WBA title holder Erislandy Lara for a July 12th PPV event.
Although the 30 year old Cuban native is currently scheduled to defend his belt against former IBF titlist Ishe Smith at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on May 2nd, that fight could be scrapped if a deal can be reached between both fighters.

Head trainer Ronnie Shields talks about the possibility of facing Canelo this summer on PPV.

“That’s the fight Erislandy has been trying to chase down for years,” claims the Houston, Texas based fight coach.

"Of course we would love the opportunity to finally get Canelo in the ring.”

Despite understandably preferring a highly anticipated showdown with the Mexican favorite on July 12th, Lara’s first title defense against Ishe Smith is the only match-up that is currently scheduled on the upcoming boxing calendar at the moment.

“A fight with Canelo is what Erislandy has been asking for,” claims coach Shields. “But until a deal is reached, we’re going to continue preparing for Ishe Smith on May 2nd.”

Although an agreement is hardly official at this point in the negotiation process, both sides have shown a genuine willingness to meet in the ring.

Canelo released this message for fight fans on his twitter account:

“Mi siguiente pelea sera el dia 12 Julio en el MGM de Las Vegas, Nevada…Tenemos varias opciones como rival, una de ellas es la primera y es Lara…Ya se le ofrecio y solo falta que acepte y deje de hablar tanta saludos a todos.”

Translated to English, the message states, “My next fight will be on July 12th, at the MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada…we have several options for potential opponents, my first choice is Lara…Now that I have made the offer, he needs to accept and stop talking, so greetings to all!”

Despite finally accepting the longstanding challenge of Team Lara, the 23 year old fighter isn’t interested in competing for Erislandy’s WBA belt. Because Canelo recognizes Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the legitimate WBA Junior Middleweight Champion, the hard punching fan favorite isn’t interested in fighting for “Lara’s trinket”.

Although the future Hall of Fame trainer is proud of his fighter’s accomplishment in earning the WBA Junior Middleweight title by defeating Alfredo Angulo last year, Coach Shields insists that the belt doesn’t make the fighter…the fighter makes the belt.

“This is a fight that the fans have wanted to see for a very long time,” states the veteran fight mentor. “If a deal can be reached between both fighters, a match-up like 'Canelo v. Lara' would transcend any title. It doesn’t have to be for a belt, we just want to get Canelo in the ring.”

“The fans want to see the recognized two best Junior Middleweights in the world finally get together. That’s more important than any world title.”
