Canelo vs Angulo fight card results

Written by
Thompson UD 10 Ricardo Alvardez
In the first bout of the evening, Canelo's brother, Ricardo, dropped a unanimous decision to Sergio Thompson in a electrifying lightweight affair.

Thompson, who entered as a late-minute replacement, floored Alvarez twice and buzzed him throughout.

The older Alvarez, who exhibited amazing durability from the opening stanza on, certainly had his moments but Thompson was the stronger, more effective fighter tonight.

The judges' scores, despite being unanimous and in favor of the right fighter, generated a bit of controversy. The official tally of 95-93, 95-93, 97-91 suggests the bout would have been a draw had Thompson not scored two knockouts.

More polished, Thompson appeared to be in a different class tonight despite the fact is was a shoot 'em up affair,

The scores of 95-93 have some fans shaking their heads as Thompson seemed to have won at least seven of ten rounds, even without the two knockdowns.

Alvarez, who has never been knocked out, had his five-fight win streak snapped and was floored for the first and second time of his career.

Linares UD 10 Arakawa
In the second bout, in a battle of attrition, former two-division world champion Jorge Linares (36-3, 23 KOs) won a wide but hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over the 'Japanese Rocky,' warrior Nihito Arakawa (24-4-1, 16 KOs).

Linares outclassed his foe tonight, moving and boxing with speed and precision. Outskilled, the Japanese fighter was a determined opponent who wouldn't relent.

The Venezuelan may have cruised to a sizeable points win, but Arakawa made him work hard for it.

The scores were 98-92, 100-90, 100-90.

Linares appeared to be in top form tonight. Is Omar Figueroa next? If so, Linares may very well be the favorite.

Santa Cruz vs Mijares
Looking like a seasoned star, 25 year old WBC junior featherweight champion Santa Cruz remained unbeaten by soundly defeating Cristian Mijares over twelve rounds.

The official scores were 119-109 and 120 - 108 twice.

Canelo vs Angulo
Alvarez looked monstrous and Angulo is made of steel. This fight was one-sided and reminscent of Creed vs Balboa in Rocky II.... Except, unlike Rocky, Angulo wasn't allowed to continue.

Canelo wins via a 10th Round controversial stoppage.

It was Canelo's best performance to date. However, at the time of the stoppage, Angulo was very lucid and protecting himself. Also, he was getting stronger and he hadn't been knocked down or even wobbled badly.

Angulo took a tremendous beating in the early and mid rounds but his pressure appeared to bother Alvarez a bit in Rounds 8 and 9. Despite still getting whacked and losing, Angulo appeared to be closing the distance and landing to much better effect in the two rounds preceeding the stoppage.

The crowd boos Canelo but it's not his fault.
