Canelo's brother: Who is Ricardo Alvarez?

Written by
One of the undercard bouts for tonight's Canelo vs Angulo fight card will feature the former's brother, Ricardo Alvarez.

Canelo and Ricardo represent only half of the Alvarez fighting klan. Brother Ramon is also an active boxer while the oldest, Rigoberto (35), hasn't laced 'em up since 2011.

So who is Ricardo Alvarez?

At 32, Ricardo is the second oldest of the fighting Alvarez's and sports a formidable 23-2-3, 14 KOs record.

A jr welterweight, Ricardo debuted in 2008 at the advanced age of 26 and has been quite active since. He doesn't have any big names on his resume yet but is riding a five-fight win streak and has never been knocked out.

In his most recent outing on December 14, Alvarez defeated Rod Salka (then 18-2) via majority decision in ten rounds.

Tonight, this Canelo brother will face perhaps the biggest test in his career in Sergio Thompson (28-3, 26 KOs) - a fighter who has won 12 of his last 13 bouts and sports an impressive 84 percent knockouts-to-fights ratio.

Like Alvarez, Thompson has never been KO'd. But unlike Canelo's brother, Thompson has a relatively big name on his ledger. In March 2012, he made quick work of Jorge Linares (then 31-2), then a hot contender, stopping him in two rounds.

The 30 year old Thompson is, of course, a last minute replacement so Alvarez may not be facing an opponent at his very best.

Nevertheless, if Roberto can defeat the well-respected Thompson in tonight's high-profile extravaganza, look for him to receive bigger and better opportunities in the future. After all, he is Canelo's brother.

After tonight, will fans still be asking, "Who the heck is this guy?"
