Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Gennady Golovkin already being discussed?

Written by
If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr defeats Bryan Vera, there's speculation WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin could be next for the Mexican.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Chavez's promoter, Bob Arum, is already working on the afforementioned potential showdown.

Chavez vs Golovkin, which is seemingly being targeted for July, would be a non-title affair at super middleweight.

“It’s a great fight. It’s a fight that’ll do tremendous pay-per-view business,” Arum told BoxingScene.com earlier today.

“And both fighters seem to want the fight. … It’s a tough, tough fight. That’s what people pay for.”

Last fall, it appeared Chavez Jr would face lineal super middleweight champion Andre Ward later this year but the latter's inability to terminate his contract with promoter Dan Goossen has Chavez's Top Rank looking at other options.

“Ward has problems with his promoter. Until that gets straightened out, I don’t think we can consider it,” Arum said.

In a January 2014 interview with the distinguished boxing website FightHype, Golovkin, when asked about the likelihood of him fighting Andre Ward later this year, stated:

"I respect Andre. He is a great champion. [But] My focus is for 160 right now because I have a lot of champions..."

"I hope, in the future, this fight will happen...I think Julio Cesar Chavez... He is a great opponent."

"He's a great champion and just he has a big name."

Like him or not, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is a big name and Chavez Jr vs Ward or Golovkin would generate widespread interest and, subsequently, healthy revenue.

In addition to Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin, WBA/IBF Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch and the comebacking Ricardo Mayorga have expressed a strong interest in fighting Chavez Jr.

If Julio Cesar Chavez defeats Bryan Vera this weekend and redeems himself of his lackluster performance in their first meeting last fall, who will win the proverbial Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Sweepstakes?
