Thurman vs Soto Karass: Preview & prediction

Written by
In a bout that should bring fireworks to yet another stacked card on Showtime, interim WBA welterweight titlist Keith Thurman (21-0 19 KOs) will go to battle with a rejuvenated and rededicated Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3 18 KOs).
Thurman vs Soto Karass is scheduled for 12 rounds and will be the third bout of four.

Soto Karass is on a two fight win streak having defeated the likes of Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto.

Those wins, he asserts, are due to his rededication to the sport, having taken his training to new levels.

His recent performances have turned Soto Karass from being just an "opponent" to a solid contender. This is a crossroads fight for him and a breakout opportunity for Thurman who is looking to get a high profile fight.

A loss for Soto Karass will halt the tremendous momentum the 'new and improved' Soto Karass has generated and, perhaps, relegate him to 'gatekeeper' status once again.

For Keith Thurman, a win would put him one step closer to the high profile bout he has been campaigning for.  He could face the winner of Broner vs Maidana or be paired against newly-crowned WBA Champ Shawn Porter or the resurgent Paulie Malignaggi. Both Porter and Paulie are coming off impressive wins last week.

With all that is at stake for Soto Karass and Thurman, this fight has the makings of an all-action slugfest and may steal the show tonight.

After losing to Maidana in a hellacious, entertaining battle, Soto Karass, a pressuring straight-forward fighter who is extremely durable, went on to record consecutive upset wins over Aydin and Andre Berto.

Soto Karass should never be counted out and his straight-ahead style coupled with the movement and explosiveness of Thurman is must see T.V.

Thurman, who has knocked out 19 of his opponents in 21 fights, scored two knock downs and an eventual knockout over former interim WBA titlist Diego Gabriel Chaves in July. After falling behind early, Thurman had to dig deep in what was his most impressive performance against a worthy opponent to date.

Thurman vs Soto Karass Prediction
Soto Karass will most likely come after Thurman from the opening bell. He will get in Thurman's chest and look to impose his will with volume punching. But Thurman will be able to intelligently move, box and land countering power shots, early and often.

Look for Thurman to win via a knockout in the middle rounds.
