Heavyweight boxing rankings

Written by

Last night, consensus heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KO) defeated Joseph Parker to claim the latter's WBO belt.

Will the new WBA/IBF/WBO champ finally fight his WBC peer, Deontay Wilder, next?

Below are the heavyweight rankings as of April 1, 2018.

If the WBA makes Alexander Povetkin Joshua's mandatory opponent, we could see Joshua vs Povetkin next. And if the WBC demands than Wilder face Dillian White straight away, Wilder would have no choice but to face him.

Several things to keep in mind:

  1. Sanctioning bodes are far from perfect and ratings can be influenced by internal politics and money. That stated, a fighter's merit is still obviously a strong consderation.

  2. Champions of one sanctioning body are never recognized as contenders in another.

  3. RING Magazine ratings are usually the most accurate and merit-based because it isn't beholden to outside interests.
