Wladimir Klitschko vs Briggs in September? Shannon says it's a done deal

Earlier today, hard-punching wild-man and former heavyweight belt-holder Shannon Briggs told ESPN he has a September date with lineal heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. "I have a date with Klitschko set for September, if not sooner," Briggs told Buncey's Boxing Podcast on ESPN.

After a 3 1/2 year hiatus, Briggs mounted a comeback in April and is 6-0 with 5 KOs in his 'second career' as a pro. And since his return, Shannon has stalked and publicly taunted Wlad, hoping to generate enough buzz to create the groundswell for a potential Klitschko vs Briggs showdown.

Has it really worked?

"His people have confirmed that - we've got a date," Briggs boasted earlier today.

"We're looking at September. We're looking at Hamburg, but hopefully we can change that venue to somewhere in America."

Given the heat being generated by the division's young guns, many believed Klitschko would dismiss Briggs in favor of fresher, perhaps more deserving competition such as Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

However, Briggs, with all of his zany antics, has garnered mainstream media attention in the U.S, U.K. and Germany. Couple that with the fact he is a former belt-holder with a wicked 77 percent knockouts-to-fights ratio and a deep amateur pedigree, and Mr. Briggs becomes an interesting opponent.

Who cares if he's 43? Wlad will be 39 in March.

Just as a comebacking bodybuilder has 'muscle memory,' Briggs has 'boxing memory' and it'll pay massive dividends should he stay focused. And keep in mind, unlike nearly all of today's top 10 heavyweights, Briggs boasts considerable professional experience against top opposition.

"It seems like there wont be a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight for Cinco de Mayo [in May], this is the biggest fight in boxing right now. The people inside and outside of boxing are talking about the heavyweight division which hasn't happened in years."

In a recent poll taken by German media giant BILD, 72 percent of those questioned chose Shannon Briggs as their desired next opponent for heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko who looked sensational in dispatching top-rated contender Kubrat Pulev in November.

Wladimir Klitschko, of course, faces American Bryant Jennings in April.

"The world wants to see me and this man [Klitschko] fight. I don't know why he's fighting Jennings. No one knows Jennings. This is a fight no one wants, that no one cares about. This is about money and glory, let's'make it happen in New York City."
