So how much will WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder earn fighting Gerald Washington Saturday night?

According to BoxingNews24, Wilder will get $900,000 while Washington will collect a smooth 250K.

So why is Washington's purse so high?

Given that Deontay's previously-scheduled opponent was forced to withdraw a few weeks before the fight, Team Wilder probably knew it had to dig a little deeper to lure a suitable opponent at the last minute.

Wilder vs Washington
Saturday, February 25, 2017
Legacy Arena
Birmingham, Alabama
Broadcast: FOX (U.S.)
Titles: WBC Heavyweight
Champion: Deontay Wilder

Of course Wilder stood to earn the largest purse of his career, $4.5 Million, last summer in a schedule bout with Alexander Povetkin in Moscow. However, the latter tested positive for a banned substance prompting Team Wilder to cancel.

Given his accomplishments, style of fighting and belt-holder status, Wilder should be paid a lot more but he has yet to captivate the casual fan yet or fight a top 5 heavyweight.

Let's rewind back two years ago.

The then-twenty-nine year old heavyweight Deontay Wilder was a perfect 32-0 with 32 knockouts and the hottest fighter in the division heading into his bout with Bermane Stiverne. Not only had Wilder knocked out all of his opponents, he'd done so within four rounds. None of his 32 foes had seen Round 5.

Wilder vs Stiverne was a ratings success and Deontay would claim the WBC title but be taken the distance for the first time in his career. Tyson vs Berbick, it wasn't. But Wilder looked very good, although not great.=

Since the Stiverne fight, the charismatic Wilder has seen a drop in stock despite keeping his undefeated record intact and stopping every subsequent opponent thus far inside the distance.

Let's hope he faces the winner of the April's title unification bout between Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua...

Nothing transcends boxing like a dominant heavyweight monster.

Purported purses for a few of Wilder's previous bouts....

July 2016 - Wilder ($1.4 Million) vs Chris Arreola ($150,000)
Jan 2016 - Wilder ($1.5 Million) vs Artur Szpilka ($250,000)
Jun 2015 - Wilder ($1.4 Million) vs Carlos Molina ($250,000)
Jan 2015 - Wilder ($1 Million) vs Bermane Stiverne ($910,000)
