Pacquiao vs Algieri: Could underdog become the most hated man in boxing?

If rumors swirling about the boxing community are indeed genuine, Team Mayweather and Team Pacquiao are currently discussing a potential blockbuster for 2015; a super fight to be endorsed by both HBO and Showtime.

That is, if Manny is successful in getting past the dark horse of the Junior Welterweight division, WBO title holder Chris Algieri.

Pacquiao vs Algieri
Date: Nov 22, 2014
Location: Macao, China
Broadcast: HBO PPV

While most are predicting another dominant Pacman performance on November 22, in Macau, China, boxing has been dubbed throughout history as the theater of the unexpected for a reason.

Anything can and often does happen in the ring...it's why fans are so eager to tune in.

One man in particular seems to think that there will undeniably be a fly in the proverbial ointment in less than a month's time...the ointment that could potentially sooth the open wound caused by the most highly anticipated match-up in boxing history not materializing up to this point.

Chris Algieri not only embraces the idea of becoming the fighter that potentially derails an epic confrontation between Pacquiao and Mayweather, he seems to thrive off of it.

"I relish this role," admits the 30 year old undefeated Champion. "I'm having the time of my life. There's no pressure on me. All of the pressure is on Manny to not only win, but to look good doing it."

The astute prizefighter is absolutely correct in his assessment.

According to Hall of Fame matchmaker and promoter Don "War a Week" Chargin, a "Mayweather vs. Pacquiao" super-fight won't seem so super if Manny doesn't win impressively on November 22.

"Manny has to win convincingly against Aglieri," claims the six decade boxing proponent.

"With another saturated PPV market projected in 2015, which includes a probable super fight between Canelo and Cotto, a match-up between Mayweather and Pacquiao will lose some of its sizzle if Pacquiao loses or even struggles against Algieri."

"All of the buzz that's been created by the back and forth banter between Manny and Floyd won't amount to much if Algieri beats Pacquiao next month. And even if Manny does win, if his performance doesn't do anything to energize the fight fans, the excitement for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will be at a minimum."

"That's why it's always important to strike while the iron's hot when promoting a prizefight. You just never know what can happen in the interim. It would be a sad boxing irony if something happened to spoil the plans of everyone involved...especially after waiting this long for a certain pound for pound fighter to agree to the fight."

But what are the odds of an upset actually taking place in Macau, China?

According to most Race and Sports Books, Pacquiao has been listed as at (-1300), with Algieri throttled at a (+700).

How accurate are the odds leading into the 144 pound grudge match?

During the media world tour promoting Pacquiao vs Algieri, Chris and Manny engaged in some friendly head to head competition while traveling abroad.

They competed in billiards, one-on-one basketball, bowling, and even conducted a contest in the batting cage driving balls into the out field of AT&T Park...Algieri won every time.

"I beat him in every friendly competition we had while on the press tour," claims the undefeated fighter. "The only challenge left is the one that truly matters. I'm used to being the underdog and have been in this role throughout my entire career. I'm very comfortable in this position."

"So don't be so surprised when I go out there and take care of business on November 22."
