Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Boxing got lucky

Many believe May's megafight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is long overdue, insisting it should have happened in 2009 when both men were younger and a bit more dominant in the ring.

Although still considered boxing's top fighters pound-for-pound, some are not convinced Floyd and Manny, at ages 36 and 38 respectively, are as sharp as they were six years ago.

Should Mayweather vs Pacquiao have happened in 2K9?

According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, the super showdown, from an interest and marketability standpoint, is far bigger today than it would have been back then.

"It'll be a tremendous, tremendous fight, and, because it took so long to make, the value of the fight has gone up tremendously," Arum told CBS Sports.

"[Back then] it wouldn't have been anywhere near the level that it is now."

"That's my opinion. The interest and so forth."

"... Some people don't follow boxing. But they're all following this. Mayweather and Pacquiao were known names five years ago, but not the way they are today."

Because Mayweather vs Pacquiao has been building-up for so long, it comes with an avalanche of public momentum. However, we are all fortunate interest peaked once more.

Just as trends in clothes and vernacular change, public demand also shifts.

Perhaps Mayweather vs Pacquiao was signed at the right moment, at least from a pubclic interest-level perspective?

Boxing got lucky.

Next time we see two larger-than-life fighters who are in the same weight class and are viewed as the sport's best, it would be ill-advised for the 'powers that be' to follow the Mayweather vs Pacquiao blueprint and attempt to build momentum as the years go by.

It would not work.
