Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Adversaries in the ring, partners in history

"Ali always said I would be nothing without him, but what would he have been without me?" - former Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier. Although the two biggest stars of boxing today, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, have long past cemented their respective spots in Canastota, New York, most fight fans would agree that both athletes need each other to achieve undeniable fistic immortality.

And while most boxing aficionados currently view "Money" May and the Pacman as bitter enemies, the two superstars are about to become business partners who stand to make each other an absurd amount of money.

On Tuesday night, the two future Hall of Famers met face to face for the first time at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida...of all places, during the halftime period of an NBA game.

Most ringside pundits would agree that the brief encounter was long overdue.

It was also reported the two boxing rivals met after the basketball event at Manny Pacquiao's hotel suite to discuss several unresolved stipulations concerning the proposed super fight on May 2.

While only the two camps truly know what went on behind closed doors on January 27, the impromptu meeting marked a huge step towards a natural progression in securing a monumental fight deal.

Despite the many slanderous remarks made by both parties over the past several years, Mayweather and Pacquiao absolutely must be willing to put aside their petty differences for the common good.

Even if the two highest earners of the sport never become the closest of friends, both fighters should humbly recognize and respect what their boxing counterpart brings to the table...financially and athletically.

Like Ali/Frazier, Louis/Schmeling, Leonard/Duran, Tyson/Holyfield, and Holmes/Cooney, the names "Pacquiao and Mayweather" have already become a symbiotic entity. Whether realized it or not, before their Tuesday night conference, the two brands are definitively much stronger entwined, and the sport of boxing is much healthier as a result.

Will the long overdue encounter result in an epic ring war later this year?

Whether both fighters like it or not, Mayweather and Pacquiao will be forever linked with or without the proposed super fight taking place. Floyd and Manny might as well benefit from their adversary's global stature and settle their business in the ring...the boxing world will greatly reward them for it.
