Mayweather vs McGregor purses: It better be in the contract, Floyd

Is retired 40 year old fight legend Floyd Mayweather that cynical?

Apparently, his "fight" with Conor McGregor is close to being finalized.

Does he really think Conor McGregor believes he can defeat him in a boxing match? And does he think McGregor is going to box him should they fight?

In boxing, Conor McGregor would lose to most novice pros. Floyd knows that.

And sure, there's a lot of money to be made but McGregor can earn good money fighting in mixed martial arts (MMA). He's already the sport's top draw. And despite the money he’d earn to face Floyd, there's not a lot of upside to getting embarrassed in front of millions.

Perhaps Floyd should be training for a MMA match?

Either Conor McGregor has a few [illegal] tricks up his sleeve or he's trying to cash himself out of the fight game and retire off his Mayweather vs McGregor purse.

"You can’t be safe if you’re taking chances, " Floyd Sr told Boxingscene.com in March.

"I think he [Floyd] doesn’t need to be taking chances with nobody. If I was him, I may not do it with Conor McGregor. You never know what people may do, he may throw an elbow, he might throw a knee. You just don’t know with him."

Conor, himself, told Esquire in 2015:

"I don't look at a man who's expert in one area as a specialist."

"I look at him as a rookie in ten other areas. If you can box, what happens if I grab hold of your legs? If you put me face-to-face with Floyd Mayweather—pound-for-pound boxing's best—if I fought Floyd, I would kill him in less than thirty seconds."

"It would take me less than thirty seconds to wrap around him like a boa constrictor and strangle him."

No, Conor couldn't take down a 'prepared and suspecting' Mayweather in 30 seconds on the street. In fact, he could potentially get knocked out if he thinks it would be that easy. Floyd understands Conor's MMA prowess and would look to defend against elbows, kicks, and especially the takedown.

Ask Ronda Rousey about that.

However, an 'unsuspecting' Floyd in the boxing ring probably wouldn't. Trusting he and his opponent were competing under boxing rules, Floyd would be more vulnerable to kicks, elbows and takedowns.

Remember Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson 2?  Mike easily bit off both of Evander's ears because the latter wasn't expecting it. Who does that?

Floyd might find himself in a similar position against McGregor.

Should Conor break the rules against Floyd, it would be the equivalent of a boxer purposely knocking out a freestyle wrestler in an agreed "wrestling match." It would be a pretty spineless move and would go beyond cheating.

"If McGregor really can’t win the fight standing up, under (boxing) rules — and those would be the rules — then why would he take it? Because he would break the rules,” fight trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas recently told ESPN.

“He’s [Conor McGregor] a promotional genius, just like Floyd is, just like Muhammad Ali was,” Atlas added. “Nobody is thinking of that part of it. Floyd, before he puts his John Hancock on any contract, he better think that part of it."

Mayweather vs McGregor contract
Floyd should ensure the contract stipulates that a disqualification on either side would result in the guilty fighter losing 100 percent of his purse. Not 10 or 15 percent... But 100 percent.

Even then, Conor still might resort to illegal tactics and risk losing his entire purse in an attempt to enhance his persona and following.

“He would come in there, he would break the rules, he would pin him, and then he would proclaim himself as the ‘king of the ring,’ Atlas added. Even though he might lose the purse money, his brand would go through the roof."

At the very least, a harsh penalty for a violation of the rules should be addressed in the contract.
