Mayweather vs Maidana and Floyd, himself, rock Google Trends

Last Saturday night in Las Vegas, boxing sensation and welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather defeated Marcos Maidana in a rematch of their May 2014 bout, also won by Mayweather.

Despite rumors the masses may be losing interest in Floyd, Google Trends tells a different story.

Google U.S.
On Friday, September 12, the query "Mayweather vs Maidana" was the second trendiest search in Google U.S. just behind "Adrian Peterson." Had the NFL star not sent shockwaves through the sportsworld by being charged with child abuse, "Mayweather vs Maidana" would have been number one.

But on Saturday, fight day, the query "Mayweather"was the trendiest search in Google U.S., finishing ahead "David Haines" and "Beyonce."

Other Nations
In Mexico, "Mayweather vs Maidana" topped the charts on fight day while "Mayweather" was No. 2 in the same country. Also on September 13, "Mayweather vs Maidana" was No.2 in the United Kingdom while "Mayweather" was the trendiest query in Canada and the Philippines, and chimed in at  No. 3 for Google Australia.

In France, also on fight day, "Floyd Mayweather" and "Mayweather" ranked at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

And in the challenger's homeland, the query "Maidana vs Mayweather" topped the charts in Google Argentina on Saturday while "Floyd Mayweather" was the trendiest query in Google South Africa the day after the fight. 

Notce how the Argentines, perhaps in adoration of their hard-hitting countryman, reversed the names, placing Maidana ahead of Mayweather.

The highest paid athlete in the world, Floyd Mayweather is no stranger to Google Trends.

In 2013, "Mayweather versus Canelo" was the tenth top trending search term in Google U.S. for the entire year. (The trendiest query was "Boston Marathon") Incidentally, Mayweather's bout with Mexican star Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez was also the most lucrative fight ever earning nearly $150 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue alone.

Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc. that shows how often a particular search term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. In essence, Google Trends shows how new events impact search popularity.
