Manny Pacquiao: An easier opponent than Ruslan Provodnikov?

In boxing, it’s often said that pressure can either break pipes or create diamonds.

The pressure felt when competing in the ring has been described by many great fighters as a somewhat traumatic and overwhelming experience that can damage even the most ardent of athletes…mentally as well as physically.

On a recent conference call with WBO Junior Welterweight title holder Chris Algieri’s head trainer, Tim Lane, the very confident and outspoken boxing coach believes that he is currently training a rare gem that will undoubtedly shine under the bright lights of the biggest stage of boxing this weekend.

A bold statement, considering the assignment.

Algieri will not only be facing the current WBO Welterweight title holder on Saturday night, but also the only eight division world champion the sport has ever seen…future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao.

“Chris has prepared and has envisioned this night for many, many years,” states Algieri’s chief second. “He’s risen to the occasion of every event that he’s ever been in. The greatest thing about Chris Algieri is that the better the opposition, the better he is.”

Not only does the former kickboxing champion turned fight trainer believe that his fighter will pull off the big upset on Saturday night, Lane genuinely feels that Algieri will make the customarily daunting task look easy.

“When we were offered the fight with Manny Pacquiao, I did not believe that it was as tough of a fight as the one with Ruslan Provodnikov,” professes Tim Lane.

“Styles make fights. With Manny being a southpaw, the style that he has and what he brings to the table, I just don’t find it to be as challenging as the fight with Ruslan.”

“Chris was hurt early in that fight in which his right eye was completely shut for most of the bout, and he still dominated Provodnikov with only one eye. I believe that Chris will dominate Pacquiao more decisively than he did Ruslan…especially with two good eyes this time.”

Although the 30 year old Long Island native earned his date with the Filipino icon by scoring a points victory over the incumbent title holder on June 14 of this year, many fight scribes and fans alike truly believe that Ruslan Provodnikov did enough to deserve the decision win and retain his belt.

While the Huntington underdog outworked and landed more punches than the Russian born champion, many felt Ruslan landed the more damaging blows and did the more consequential work.

The judges at ringside ultimately scored the twelve round contest 114-112, 114-112, and 109-117, in favor of the new WBO Junior Welterweight Champion, Chris Algieri.

A controversial split decision victory doesn’t exactly resemble the dominant performance that trainer Tim Lane will often describe. But a win is a win nonetheless, and it was obviously enough to land a big opportunity opposite Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night.

The talented fight trainer explains why he feels Chris Algieri will thoroughly and decisively beat one of the best pound for pound fighters in the entire world.

“Most people don’t know that Chris has always been more effective against southpaws than orthodox fighters,” claims Coach Lane. “He’s never been able to do certain things against right handed guys that he can proficiently do against lefties. People will see on Saturday night that he’s a totally different fighter against southpaws.”

Ealier in the week, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach made the prediction that Manny Pacquiao would blow out his relatively inexperienced opponent in less than one round.

Lane insists that Freddie is merely trying to instill some much needed confidence in his fighter.

“If I were in Freddie’s shoes, I would be saying that too. He knows what the outcome of the fight is going to be. I really feel for him. I love Manny, but there’s no way he’s beating Chris. I think Freddie is aware of this, and that’s why he made that prediction.”
