Gennady Golovkin vs Cotto or Canelo? Who will GGG fight next?

In front of 9,323 fans at the StubHub Center Saturday night, it was business as usual for WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) as he delivered another crushing knockout, dismantling Marco Antonio Rubio (51-7-1, 51 KOs) in Round 2.

It was Golovkin's 18th consecutive stoppage further cementing his place as boxing's hardest puncher pound-for-pound.

Golovkin connected on 45 out of 99 punches (45%) while Rubio connected on 21 of 76 punches (28%).

Every time Golovkin wins, the questions are posed:

1) Who will Gennady Golovkin fight next, and
2) Will he face a 'name' opponent?

In the post-fight presser, Golovkin made it known who he would like to fight next.

"I will fight anybody. I think first Miguel Cotto," he said.

"I respect Canelo, he is good boy, but Chavez, too."

"But first Miguel Cotto."

Most are expecting Cotto's next opponent to be Canelo Alvarez sometime in the spring. However, Canelo is recovering from an ankle injury and didn't look impressive in his split decision victory over Lara in July. So one must wonder if Golden Boy Promotions would be willing to immediately match its star against a fighter as sound as Cotto after a nine or ten month layoff.

If Golden Boy passes on a Spring Cotto fight, it may set-up a possibility for Cotto and Golovkin to face each other in a middleweight unification showdown in 2015. Cotto is one of the most respected fighters in boxing because he is willing to fight anybody. And now, although Cotto is the lineal middleweight champion, most feel that Golovkin is best in the division.

If Golovkin vs Cotto happens this Spring, it will likely take place in Madison Square Garden which has become Cotto's adopted home as he has fought there nine times in his career. Golovkin fought at Madison Square Garden this past July when he knocked out Daniel Geale.

Golovkin, who likes to stay active, will likely be back in the ring again in February, although an opponent has not been determined yet. By then, we should know who exactly Miguel Cotto will fight next.

Canelo is still probably the favorite to fight Cotto next due to the financial spoils of such a match-up. However, a Cotto versus Golovkin fight would be huge as well and would certainly determine the true middleweight champion of the world.
