Gennady Golovkin: Full speed ahead…with or without Miguel Cotto

Although the “Monster of the Middleweights”, Gennady Golovkin, will have his hands full this Saturday, February 21, in Monte Carlo when he defends his 160 pound titles against “uncrowned champion” Martin Murray from the UK, Triple G’s handlers are hoping to pit their fighter in the ring with a marquee name later this year.

Managing director of K2 Promotions, Tom Loeffler, claims that a unification bout with lineal champion Miguel Cotto would be the optimal situation for his heavy handed pugilist.

“Cotto versus Golovkin in Madison Square Garden would be a huge fight,” stated Loeffler. “No one on our side is looking past a fighter as accomplished as Martin Murray, but a fight with Cotto would clearly be a PPV fight.”

“The WBC has decreed the eventual winner of Golovkin/Murray will become the mandatory challenger for Miguel Cotto’s 160 pound title. Hopefully we can eventually make that fight happen later this year.”

Although the World Boxing Council has given the current lineal champion orders to defend their coveted distinction against the inevitable victor of this weekend’s showdown between Golovkin and Murray, the proclamation is no guarantee that the four division world champion will agree to the proposed super-fight.

Head trainer for Triple G, Abel Sanchez, insists that they will compete for the renowned “green belt” later this year, with or without Miguel Cotto.

“Obviously we have to take care of business on February 21 before thinking about other dates,” professes the astute boxing coach.“

But if everything goes well against Murray, we’re looking at coming back sometime in May. I don’t know who that opponent would be in May, but Cotto is scheduled to fight in the middle of the year also.

“Cotto is the WBC and lineal Middleweight Champion, and Gennady is the interim WBC champ, as well as his mandatory for that title. According to the WBC, Cotto is obligated to fight Golovkin after he fights in May. We would like to put together a huge fight with Cotto in the Fall. But it doesn’t matter if it’s against Miguel or the number two contender, we’re going to be fighting for the WBC Middleweight title with or without Miguel Cotto”

Sanchez admits a possible option could be looming within the 168 pound weight division.

“Andre and his promoter have expressed the desire to have a couple of tune up fights, which I think is a smart move after being inactive for such a long period of time. But if that fight with Andre Ward presents itself in the Fall, well then so be it."
