Will two of the most avoided fighters in the sport go head-to-head? No where on the horizon as an opponent for Canelo Alvarez or Floyd Mayweather, Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KO), the WBA's interim-junior middleweight champion, plans to move six pounds north to challenge the fearsome Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO), the WBA middleweight titleholder.

"Yes. I spoke to Lara today and he wants to fight GGG, Manager Luis DeCubas Jr told BoxingScene.

"He feels they are both the most feared guys in boxing so why not fight each other?"

Network dispute?
Lara is promoted by Golden Boy whose stable of top talent is exclusively shown on Showtime. Golovkin’s high profile fights, however, are shown on HBO.

The fighters' promoters, Golden Boy and K2, may not have a problem doing business with each other but will network rivals prevent Golovkin vs Lara from happening?

"HBO would have to speak to Lara's adviser Al Haymon, but we are very happy fighting on Showtime," said DeCubas.

"They have given him the opportunities to showcase his talents and they will continue to do so. Lara has proved he's one of the best in the sport regardless of the weight division he fights in, so it’s a very intriguing match-up."

Fresh off his win over Austin Trout last fall, Lara lobbied for a fight with Canelo Alvarez, even berating the Mexican on Twitter. However, Alfredo Angulo, who Lara knocked out last summer, was ultimately selected as Canelo's next opponent.

Golovkin will fight again in Madison Square Garden on April 26. Possible opponents include Andy Lee and James Kirkland.
