Gennady Golovkin vs Andre Ward: One is ready, one isn't?

WBA Middleweight title-holder Gennady Golovkin may be the most destructive fighter in boxing. He's also arguably the most avoided.

Golovkin is a dangerous warrior who elite competitors, such as lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, probably deem as too much risk for the reward for the time being.

Riding a 15 fight knockout streak and mind-blowing 89.3% knockout-to-fights ratio, Golovkin is a hit with the sport's hardcore enthusiasts but hasn't quite transcended into the mainstream. As a result, if you're a popular, world class fighter from 154 lbs to 168 lbs, the monetary rewards for fighting him are eclipsed by the risks of having your stock devalued by a loss.

Enter Andre Ward, the lineal super middleweight champion who reigns eight pounds north of Gennady and is the consensus No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter.

Is Andre Ward (27-0, 14KOs) is ready to step in the ring with Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO)?

"I don't really know how to feel about that fight. From a business standpoint of course [we can do it]."

"I  have no problem with that, but what I do have a problem with is when you build your reputation as being this fearless guy from 160 to 175 - but then backtrack and say 'oh it's about the business and we're going to wait,' " uttered Ward, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games.

To Ward's point, Team Golovkin has shown little interest in making that fight happen and has given more credence to hopeful showdowns with Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr instead.

"I'm not chasing anybody. I think I've earned the right to fight the biggest and the best fights and that's what we're in the process of doing," Ward told BoxingScene.com.

Perhaps Gennady Golovkin is waiting for Andre Ward to become a massive draw just as Sergio Martinez is waiting for Golovkin to do the same?

Yes, sometimes business delays big events in boxing.

Andre Ward vs Gennady Golovkin is a hardcore fight fan's dream but that bout hasn't matured yet as neither star is a box office attraction among the masses, unlike the Mayweathers, Pacquiaos, Cottos, Canelos and Chavezes.

Ward vs Golovkin, at least today, would be a high-risk, relatively low-reward bout (considering the level of opposition) for both fighters.

Perhaps Team Golovkin should promote its fighter as someone who is "willing to fight anyone from 160 to 175 lbs minus Andre Ward because that fight doesn't make sense at the moment?"

Both fighters need more exposure on the ‘big stage’ and added relevance among casual fans in order for Ward vs Golovkin to be a true superfight.
