Despite the fact that he’s 29-0 with 26 KOs, his abilities are still questioned. Some feel his devastating punching power will overwhelm the top fighters in the sport while others insist an experienced, slick fighter would expose him.

Through his 29 professional fights, Golovkin has yet to face adversity in the ring - or a legitimate top tier opponent.

These are two of the key components that separate the good fighters from the elite.

Until he faces such challenges, there will always be questions about how good he truly is.

Gennady Golovkin's next fight is scheduled for April 26th but, unfortunately, his opponent will not be on boxing's elite tier (such as Andre Ward, Sergio Martinez, Floyd Mayweather) as all of those potential foes already have other fights lined up.

He may decide to fight James Kirkland or Andy Lee but he would be a huge favorite against both - And a win over either fighter would not significantly raise Golovkin’s stature.

Gennady Golovkin vs Erislandy Lara?

Golovkin’s camp could reach out to Lara’s team and negotiate a fight that would be high risk for both men.

As is the case with Golovkin, Lara has also been unable to get a fight with a legitimate star.

If these two men were to meet in the ring, the winner’s stature would rise significantly and it would be demanded they face a top pound for pound fighter, possibly on PPV.

For the loser, it could be devastating because it would give stars an excuse not to fight him, and it may take as long as 18 months for him to position himself for another big fight. But as is the case with many possible matchups, the real roadblock that could prevent this fight from happening is the cold war between HBO and Showtime.

Until we see Golovkin in the ring with best, people will continue to speculate how good he really is.

Are we looking at the next PPV star or just a tremendous puncher who has overwhelmed lesser, naturally smaller competition?

Hopefully we will learn the answer sometime in 2014.
