Gennady Golovkin: GGG Team draws fire from Andre Ward

Lineal super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KO) has praise for potential future opponent WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO) but lashed out at GGG's handlers. "Golovkin is a humble guy. He's a good fighter. A silver medalist. He's making a name for himself, but it's the guys around him that a lot of times talk tough," Ward recently told BoxingScene.

Riding a 16 fight knockout streak and mind-blowing 90% knockout-to-fights ratio, Golovkin is a hit with the sport's hardcore enthusiasts but hasn't quite transcended into the mainstream and probably shouldn't be considered a literal superstar quite yet.

It's certainly in the best interest of Team Golovkin and its fighter, however, to convince the public their man is already a superstar, not unlike Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Roy Jones.

"They [Team Golovkin] have a lot to say. My thing is, if you have to go on the record and plead the case for your fighter and say that he's a star - don't try to force feed us that Golovkin is a star, Ward asserted."

"If you've got to go on the record to say that he's a star - he's probably not there yet."

"I think he deserves some of the hype that he's getting, but they are trying to force feed us that Golovkin is a star right now and he's not there yet," Ward said.

Also drawing the ire of Ward is Team Golovkin's insistence their man stands prepared to fight anyone from 154 to 175 lbs.

"My only thing is this....I'm not the type of guy to bully other fighters or look for guys in lower weight classes."

"But they went on the record and they've campaigned for years that [Golovkin] will fight anybody from 154 to 175...anybody...and anybody means anybody. So I said that I have no problem fighting Golovkin and now all of a sudden it's a campaign to stay at 160."

To Ward's point, Team Golovkin has shown little interest in making Ward vs Golovkin happen and has given more credence to the possibility of showdowns with Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr instead.

Perhaps Gennady Golovkin and his team believe Ward is too much risk for the reward at the moment?

Andre Ward vs Gennady Golovkin is a hardcore fight fan's dream but that bout hasn't matured yet as neither fighter has achieved enough superstardom among the masses to generate the revenue to justify the risk of such a showdown.

However, if Gennady continues to win impressively, he will be a bonified superstar and PPV attraction very soon. His stock soars quarterly as a result of his crowd-pleasing style and frequency in the ring.

"Maybe you guys can explain this to me. To me it looks like a lot of backpedaling and grandstanding. They want to make this excuse and that excuse and give this reason and that reason."

Ward vs Golovkin... Perhaps coming to a theatre near you in 2015. The war of words has already started.
