Frans Botha vs Sonny Bill Williams: 'White Buffalo' to Face Rugby Star

1990's top 10 heavyweight contender Frans Botha (48-8-3-1NC, 29 KOs) returns this Friday to face Sonny Bill Williams (5-0-3 KO). Botha vs Williams will take place in Queensland, Australia and the famous 44 year old South African will look to get back on the winning track having lost his last three bouts.

Question 1: Why is Frans Botha, who has only one win in his last six bouts, still fighting?

Does he need the money that bad?

Question 2: How can a commission sanction a bout between a fighter with 48 wins in 60 fights and a fella who is just 5-0?

Is Frans Botha that far over-the-hill?

Regardless of how much Frans Botha has left, he's very confident about his upcoming bout - and justifiably so. He's fighting a rugby player who hasn't fought in a year and has only five fights on his professional ledger.

"He has got a lot of balls taking this fight, I'll give him that," said Botha.

"I take my hat off to him. In reality though, this is not a fight that would normally take my interest - me fighting a guy with five fights. The fact that he is a superstar in rugby has generated a lot of interest and that is what has made it a viable option."

"You really want to know what I think of him as a fighter ... he is very green. I have seen a lot problems in the film I have watched."

"As I was saying, the reality is Sonny Bill Williams does not belong in the ring with me. You look at the stats - they are right there. He shouldn't be stepping foot in the ring with me."

Should we take Botha seriously? Don't forget he's been in the ring with the likes of Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko, Mike Tyson and Michael Moorer to mention but a few.

Who cares that he's 44 and well past his prime - If Botha loses or this fight or it goes past three rounds, it'll be utterly embarrassing for the South African heavyweight.

And if the unthinkable happens and Frans Botha is defeated or if Williams makes this bout very competitive, don't be surprised if Frans is Kimbo Slice's next opponent.

Yes, Botha vs Kimbo may be coming to a theatre near you.

So who is Botha fighting, again?

The 27 year old New Zealander is a rugby player who is 5-0 as heavyweight boxer and the current New Zealand Professional Boxing Association (NZPBA) Heavyweight Champion.

He's also rated by BoxRec as New Zealand's top heavyweight. (Fellow New Zealander David Tua is considered inactive having not fought in over a year)

The 6'4" Williams insists boxing has improved his rugby game and that he's now more confident and psychologically mentally tougher. The rugby star also stated that preparation for fights is "good off-season training."

Williams last fought February 8th, knocking out Clarence Tillman (then 11-8-2) in the first round.
