Francois Botha vs Danny Williams? Say it isn't so

Fresh off yet another loss Monday, former heavyweight contender Danny Williams (46-25, 35 KO) may face Francois Botha, another former top 10 heavyweight, on February 5 in Bata, Equatorial Guinea.

Williams and Botha have much in common.

For starters, they are lightyears past their respective primes.

Over the hill? Not quite.

These fellas may be over several hills but have a lot of courage for continuing to entertain fans with their ring prowess.

Danny Williams, who, in 2004, conquered a badly fadded Mike Tyson in what many still consider a sizable upset, was once a mighty contender who unsuccessfully challegened Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title following the Tyson win.

Now 41, Williams, formerly one of the toughest fighters in all of boxing, has lost four in a row and 15 of his 17 bouts.

In his most recent fight earler this week, Williams was thoroughly beaten in Hungary by a guy who was 7-0. The scores were not close: 100-90 and 99-91 twice.

Not to be outdone, Francois Botha (48-11-3, 29 KOs), one of the few top tier heavyweights from the 1990s still competing, was stopped inside the distance by Polish prospect Andrzej Wawrzyk (29-1, 16 KOs) last March.

Weighing 257½ lbs, the now 46 year old former multiple time title challenger looked more like Santa Claus than a professional heavyweight and has dropped six in a row and 7 of his last 8.

Of the two, the still-brave Williams seems the worse for wear so look for Botha to grind out a decision.

Regardless, let's hope these valiant warriors stay healthy and the loser finally calls it quits.
