Floyd Mayweather: Does 'Money May' need Charlie Zelenoff on his undercard in September?

Almost two weeks have passed since Floyd Mayweather Jr. won a majority decision over former two division world champion Marcos Maidana, and media outlets are still waiting for the official May 3rd PPV numbers to be released by Showtime Sports. By comparison, Mayweather’s previous September 13th, 2013, PPV event numbers were reported just six days following the date of the fight.

What does this mean?

Speculation points to disappointing figures, which could be as low as 850,000.

On May 13th, respected matchmaker Rick Glaser posted this intriguing tweet concerning the absent May 3rd Showtime PPV numbers:

"Floyd's PPV only did 854,000! Showtime released nothing, now we know why! Spin King Stephen Espinoza into action as "Red Ink" is flowing!" (8:34 AM - 11 May 2014)

Although Stephen Espinosa of Showtime Sports has denied the claims, stating that any figures being reported prematurely are pure speculation, the delay in details regarding the projected numbers can’t be construed as a positive sign.

With the over saturation of the PPV market in 2014, does the biggest name in boxing need to add Charlie Zelenoff to his undercard in a four round special attraction to break a million PPV purchases this fall?

Could the infamous Charlie Z be the next Eric “Butterbean” Esch of PPV boxing?

To stoke PPV sales in the late 90’s, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum would regularly feature the “King of the Four Rounders” on the undercard of former Olympic Gold Medalist Oscar De La Hoya’s fight cards.

The popular rotund Super Heavyweight became a mainstream attraction within the sport and brought additional attention to the entire event.

Although most knowledgeable fight fans didn’t recognize Butterbean as a legitimate contender in the sport, mainstream and casual fans admittedly tuned in to watch how the stout puncher would fair with great anticipation.

Is the underground fighter the “shot in the arm” Mayweather Promotions needs to cross that million PPV threshold once again?

If Mayweather remains adamant about not facing Manny Pacquiao in the near future, Floyd Jr. might want to consider calling up Charlie Zelenoff to boost PPV sales in September.
