Donald Trump endorsements: Does Don King support business tycoon?

Bombastic, in-your-face, controversial and highly unconventional, Donald Trump has received the endorsements of quite a few characters from the world of sports who are every bit as (oddly) interesting as the man they support.

Earlier this week, GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump announced via Twitter he’d received the endorsement of legendary boxing promoter Don King.

“The great boxing promoter, Don King, just endorsed me. Nice!,” a presumed staffer tweeted on the billionaire’s behalf.

Is King endorsing Trump?

The wild-haired 84 year old, who supported Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Barack Obama and often boasts about his financial wealth, insisted he has made no official Donald Trump endorsement at this moment.

“No,” King told the Daily News at the funeral for Muhammad Ali. “I’m endorsing the people."

"I’m not a Republican or a Democrat, I’m a Republicrat, and I go with the will of the people. The only reason Trump exists is because of the will of the people.”

The controversial King added,” I like Mr. Trump. He’s an idol of America.”

King and Trump are no strangers to each other and often collaborated on major boxing events in the 1980s when both business icons were powerbrokers in the sport.

Should King, referred to as the ‘black Donald Trump’ by a critical Rev. Al Sharpton, endorse The Don, he would join a host of …umm.. interesting characters from the sports world to do so, including Mike Tyson, Bobby Knight, Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan, Mike Ditka, Tito Ortiz, John Rocker, Terrell Owens and Latrell Sprewell.

Don King is arguably the most controversial figure in boxing history and perhaps all of professional sports but his contributions to the Sweet Science are undisputedly legendary. However, many will assert he's a unscrupulous character who has used his charm and guile to ride a wave of success off the blood, sweat and tears of others.

But regardless of who he supports in the upcoming presidential election, there will never be another Don King - for better or worse.
