Cotto vs Canelo PPV buys: Nearly 2 million projected?

Should it happen next year, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya believes a superfight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and former junior middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 32 KOs) could reach nearly two million buys.

Since 2009, the public has been demanding Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao, a fight that would be - or would have been - the highest grossing bout ever, by far.

"Like every fan out there, I'm waiting patiently," De La Hoya told USA Today Sports.

"But my patience is starting to run out and now I'm smiling over Cotto vs Canelo, which I know can fill that void."

And while it may be a stretch to insist Cotto vs Canelo has the potential to surpass Mayweather vs Pacquiao had they fought between 2010 and 2013, some in boxing are already lauding it as the biggest fight that can be made today.

"When Cotto-Canelo gets made, I see no reason why it can't come close to the two million mark in pay-per-view buys," said De La Hoya recently.

"Yes, you have to give credit to Miguel Cotto, he's a great fighter. But you bring in the Canelo factor and it brings pay-per-view fights to a whole new level."

Last September, Mayweather vs Canelo generated 2.2 million buys on Showtime, garnering just shy of 200,000 purchases of the PPV record (Mayweather vs De La Hoya, 2007).
