Chavez vs Martinez a Hit, According to Live Gate and Google

Chavez vs Martinez paled in comparision to the numbers put up by Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao but was a hit nonetheless.

Much to the approval promoters Bob Arum and Lou DiBella, Chavez vs Martinez purportedly drew a live gate of $3,052,475 Million USD from 16,939 tickets sales via a sold out Thomas and Mack Center, according to Keith Kizer, the Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director.

The 26 year old Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's purse was $3 Million USD while Sergio Martinez's purse was a little less than half of Chavez's, totalling $1.4 Million USD.

Not bad for two fighters making their PPV debuts...

And keep in mind, the live gate revenue doesn't include income generated from the pay-per-view sales which is still being tabulated.

Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO) gave the younger Julio Cesar Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KO) a boxing lesson for eleven rounds before having to survive a knockdown and apparent near knockout en route to winning a wide unanimous decision. The scores were 118-109 twice and 117-110.

So how did the Sergio Martinez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr card stack up against the Saul 'Canelo' Alavrez vs Josesito Lopez card at MGM Grand?

There was no comparison.

Although all of the 12,000+ available tickets for the Alvarez vs Lopez card were sold, MGM Grand holds 4,000 fewer spectators. Couple that with the fact there was greater interest in Sergio Martinez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and its no surprise the live gate revenue for the Arum/DiBella card doubled that of the Golden Boy promoted fight card.

WBC Jr Middleweight Champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez looked dominant in stopping a resilient but overmatched Joseito Lopez in five rounds.

Highest in Argentina and United States
Google Insights, which provides a representation of regional and international interests based on user searches for the world's largest search engine, showed Martinez vs Chavez Jr dominated Argentina's highest trending sports searches during the week of September 11.

In addition, boxing-related queries in the United States represented 30% of the top 10 rising sports searches that same week, besting all NFL searches but one.

Data from Chavez's homeland of Mexico is not available.
